What’s your favourite Kitchen Tool? My pressure cooker; it makes amazingly flavourful stews, broths and risottos.
Do you have a “comfort food”? I love food and I love trying new flavours. Some of my comfort foods are lasagna, nachynka, and cherry pie.
What’s your most stocked kitchen ingredient in your pantry? Beans, lentils and barley.
Cherished Cookbook: My collection of ATCO Blue Flame cookbooks that I started collecting in the 1970s.
A dish, ingredient or food you were surprised that you enjoyed? Parsnips - I now love them roasted and drizzled with maple syrup.
Best kitchen tip you received: Always check the leftovers you have on hand when meal planning in order to incorporate them into your planned-overs.
Best household tip you received: Use a squeegee and water to clean mirrors. This saves on time and the environment.
What area of food is the most interesting to you? I am very interested in the whole area of food safety, the proper handling and storage of food and canning and preserving foods.

Norene Larson, who is celebrating 25 years with ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen this year, began her career by answering consumer questions on the phone. She became supervisor of the Customer Advisor Service in 2009 and continues to lead the team of home economists who answer over 30,000 calls a year from Albertans.

What’s your favourite Kitchen Tool? a very sharp paring knife
Do you have a "comfort food"? I have several… pancakes with maple syrup, chili, and toasted whole grain bread with butter and honey – and oranges
What’s your most stocked kitchen ingredient in your pantry? In the pantry there are always two kinds of beans – coffee beans for coffee and black beans and kidney beans for chili. In the refrigerator you will almost always find oranges – my favourite fruit.
Cherished Cookbook: Of all of our Blue Flame Kitchen cookbooks, I use the Everyday ones the most. Great food made with fewer ingredients.
A dish, ingredient or food you were surprised that you enjoyed? Kale is a great vegetable I have come to appreciate in anything from a salad to stir fry.
Best kitchen tip you received: Clean up as you work.
Best household tip you received: A little baking soda on a wet cloth cleans a stove top beautifully.
What is your favourite dessert to make? Pavlova and/or our Dark and Delicious Chocolate Cake
What is your favourite herb or spice? For a spice it’s cinnamon - in almost anything – especially cooked cereal. Basil is my favourite herb. There is nothing better that a sandwich made with garden tomatoes, basil leaves and whole grain bread – and a little butter or mayo of course.
