History of ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen


The original home service department was established in 1930 to help homemakers get the best results when using the "exciting new cooking fuel, natural gas". "You can do it better with gas" was the motto of the time.

During this era, new appliances that utilized this "wonder fuel" were introduced into Alberta's marketplace. These appliances would revolutionize household chores, making life easier and more efficient. It was the job of the utility home economists to show homemakers how to operate the appliances. New recipes were developed and tested, thereby encouraging homemakers to use their new gas appliances. As well, the home economists were available by telephone to solve any other household problem.

Time marches on. Appliances and recipes have changed. You, our customers, have changed, and we too have changed with the times. Today, ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen continues to keep in touch with our customers in the nearly 300 communities served by ATCO Gas.

Our home economists answer around 40,000 inquiries annually about food, cooking, and other questions related to the science of everyday life through our toll-free Customer Advisor Service.

Our website is well stocked with recipes and information about cooking and your home.

Our Culinary Programs team offers hands-on classes in our new 3,000 square foot Learning Centre in ATCO Centre - Calgary.

Our tradition of providing recipes is one of our most valued services. ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen cookbooks have become culinary staples in many Alberta kitchens.

Energy & Safety Tips
Cooking attire

Don't wear loose clothes while cooking. An electrical coil on the stove reaches a temperature of 800 degrees and a gas flame goes over 1,000 degrees. A dishtowel, potholder or a loose sleeve can catch fire at 400 degrees.
