Tidying Up Your Kitchen

After such a busy cooking season, the kitchen and pantry can end up being a complete mess and if left too long the mess can grow into complete chaos. Before things get out of hand, it’s good to do a sweep of the kitchen to clean and reorganize. 

If you don’t have time for a deep cleaning of your kitchen, there are some quick tasks that you can do to make a difference:

  1. Put any holiday items back in storage. 
  2. Remove any clutter from your counters. 
  3. Wipe down your counters, stove top and the fronts of large appliances.
  4. Tidy up the pantry and fridge.
  5. Wash the floors.

If you’re like us and your kitchen was put through the wringer this holiday season, a thorough cleaning is in order. There are a couple ways to approach a cleaning of this magnitude. One, you can set a day or weekend aside and tackle the whole project at once. Or, if you prefer, you can break the tasks up and tackle one project at a time and complete the cleaning over a period of time.

Project 1: The Pantry/Cabinets

  1. Remove all items and scrub down all the shelves with warm soapy water.
  2. Evaluate the food items you have:
  3. ​​a) Discard any items that have gone past their best-before-date.
    b) Sort items back into their groups. Flours and other baking items together. Sort all your spices and seasonings together.
  4. ​​Sort pots, pans and other cabinet items, including drawers. 
  5. When your shelves are dry, organize your sorted items back into pantry/cabinets. Make sure all your frequently used items are easily accessible. 

PANTRY TIP: Organize items according to best-before-date. Items with a best-before-date coming up first should be placed near the front to ensure you will use them first. 

Project 2: The Refrigerator

  1. Similar to the pantry, remove all items and wipe down all the shelves and drawers with warm soapy water. 
  2. Dispose of any items that have expired or that have gone past their best-before-date.
  3. Sort items and return items to their shelves /drawers.
  4. Remove any items that have passed their best-before-dates from the freezer.
  5. Wipe down the exterior and handles with warm soapy water.

Project 3: General Surface Cleaning

  1. Dust light fixtures, vents, cupboards and large appliances. 
  2. Wipe down cupboards with warm soapy water and the fronts of any appliances. If you have any stainless steel appliances, also wipe them with stainless steel polish. 
  3. Wipe down the inside and outside of your garbage can with paper towels.
  4. Wipe down the walls.
  5. Wash the floors. 
  6. Scrub down the sink and faucet.
  7. Wash all your tea towels, dish towels and aprons. Wash re-useable sponges or discard any old ones. 

Lastly, check the inside of your microwave and oven. If needed, wipe the interior of your microwave clean with warm soapy water. To clean your oven, consult your owner’s manual. ​​
