Cleaning FAQ: Your cleaning questions solved!

We receive hundreds of calls every week looking for the best techniques and tricks to clean around the home. Our Customer Advisors have responded to your most frequently asked questions. If your household dilemma isn’t found below, call us! We are available to help.

How can I remove the residue left after removing a sticker?
Some stickers and their residue are very hard to remove. Sometimes, just soaking in warm soapy water or rubbing with cooking oil or dish detergent will work. For more stubborn problems, there are commercial products at grocery and hardware stores. Be sure to read and follow all the information with these commercial products. Because they may damage the surface, a test spot is necessary. For more information call ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen and talk to one of our Customer Advisors.

Something spilled on my carpet. What do I do?
As a general rule, it is important to blot up carpet spills as soon as possible. Use clean light-coloured cloths or rags and blot; do not rub the spill. Even stand on the cloths to get more out, if you have to! After blotting as much as possible, use a carpet spot-cleaner, that you have tested in a hidden area to be sure it is safe to use on your carpet. For more information on how to clean a specific stain, call ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen and talk to one of our Customer Advisors.

How do I clean the build-up inside my kettle?
Vinegar is an excellent way to help break down mineral deposit in many small appliances. Unless it says otherwise in your use and care booklet, fill the kettle with equal amounts vinegar and water and let it sit for up to two hours. Rinse with clean water, boil clean water in kettle and discard water before using. For more information on de-scaling, call ATCO Blue Flame Kitchen and talk to one of our Customer Advisors.

Why does my high efficiency front-load washing machine develop odours?
These washing machines use less water and are designed in such a way that lint, moisture, dirt and soap residue can accumulate around the door. Leaving the washer door open after using can help. Also, refer to your appliance care book for information on how to clean your machine, a process that may be referred to as freshening. Several commercial products to help with this cleaning are available in the cleaning sections of grocery and hardware stores. What is a green way to clean windows and mirrors?
A combination of vinegar and water is a great - and green - solution for cleaning windows and mirrors. The vinegar helps to eliminate mineral build-up and residues left by commercial cleaning products. Using a micro fiber cloth or a squeegee will give you sparkling windows and mirrors in no time. Energy & Safety Tips
Using evergreens

Effective landscaping can also have an impact on your home’s energy efficiency. Use evergreen trees and shrubs to create a windbreak. A windbreak will reduce wind speed for a distance of as much as 30 times the windbreak’s height. The most common method is to plant the evergreens to the north and NW of your home.
