BRAISED RED CABBAGE WITH APPLES

This traditional way of cooking red cabbage and red apples creates a sweet and tangy side dish that goes perfectly with roast pork.

BRAISED RED CABBAGE WITH APPLES

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp salted butter
  • 10 cups thinly sliced red cabbage
  • 3 cups thinly sliced peeled Golden Delicious apples
  • 1/4 cup packed golden brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves

Directions

  1. Melt butter in a large frypan over medium heat. Add remaining ingredients and sauté for 5 minutes or until cabbage starts to soften. Reduce heat and cook, covered, stirring occasionally, until cabbage and apples are tender and liquid is evaporated, about 45 minutes.
