Start with your onion cut in half. In the side of the onion instead of in the stem end, make a cut into the onion parallel with the cutting board, leaving about a centimetre attached to the rest of the onion. Make another cut above the first. Turn it toward yourself, then cut down into the onion in thin strips. Next, rotate your onion 90 degrees, and with your hand in claw form, carefully slice down into the onion, cutting it into nice cubes. To safely remove bits from your knife, use a plastic bench scraper.
