Almost French Bread

This delicious home-baked bread has a chewy texture and slight crusty crust, typical of French bread. Our version is made with just a few ingredients added to a bread machine.  

Storage Time: 2 days on the shelf, 7 days in the refrigerator and up to 2 months in the freezer.

Yield: Makes 1 loaf (2 lbs)

Almost French Bread


  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 1 1/2 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 1/2 tbsp liquid honey
  • 1 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp bread machine yeast


  1. Place ingredients into baking pan of bread machine in the order in which they are listed or follow manufacturer’s operating instructions. Select the basic/white bread cycle.
  2. Remove baked bread from pan and cool on a rack.
  3. Alternatively, to make two French loaves, select dough cycle and remove dough after dough cycle is finished, form into loaves, let rise until double and bake in oven.
