ASIAN MEATBALLS

Our tangy Sweet and Sour Sauce boosts the flavour of these classic beef meatballs. Pass them around with toothpicks at your next cocktail party or family gathering.

Yield: Makes 5 dozen.

ASIAN MEATBALLS

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb (0.75 kg) lean ground beef
  • 3/4 cup fresh bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Dash hot pepper sauce
  • Sweet and Sour Sauce*
  • 1 green onion, diagonally sliced

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Combine lean ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, garlic, ginger, salt and hot pepper until well blended. Shape mixture into small balls. Place meatballs on a rack in a shallow pan.
  3. Bake until completely cooked, about 35 - 40 minutes. Cooked meatballs may be frozen for up to 1 month.
  4. Combine hot meatballs with Sweet and Sour Sauce. Garnish with green onion.

SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup apricot jam
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

Yield: Makes about 1 cup.

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium heat until mixture is heated through.
