Cran Pear Relish

A delicious and savoury fall condiment. Serve this relish on the side with poultry and pork.or on top of a hot turkey sandwich.

Yield: Makes 3 cups

Cran Pear Relish


  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tsp canola oil
  • 3/4 cup packed golden brown sugar, divided
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 pkg (12 oz/340 g) cranberries
  • 3/4 cup water
  • Dash salt
  • 1 cup diced peeled pear
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes


  1. In a medium saucepan, sauté onion in oil until lightly golden, about 7 minutes.
  2. Stir in 1/4 cup brown sugar and cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes. Stir in vinegar and cook 2 minutes.
  3. Add cranberries, water, salt and remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Stir in pear and red pepper flakes. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes or until slightly thickened; cool.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
