Gado Gado is an Indonesian peanut sauce that can be used as a condiment for rice and vegetable dishes or a dip for raw veggies and other finger foods. We use peabutter in place of peanut butter to keep it peanut free.

Yield: Makes 1 1/2 cups.

  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) peabutter
  • 2 tbsp (25 mL) soy sauce
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) sambal oelek (chili paste)
  • 3/4 cup (175 mL) vegetable broth
  • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
  • 1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) freshly ground black or white pepper

  1. Whisk together all ingredients in a medium saucepan. Cook over low heat, whisking constantly, until heated through. Transfer to a serving dish. Serve warm or cold with crudités or pita chips.

Tip: Peabutter is a peanut-free alternative to peanut butter. Look for it in the aisle where peanut butter is sold. We used NoNuts Golden Peabutter in this recipe. Sambal oelek is a chili paste mixture used in Malaysian and Indonesian cooking. Look for it in the Asian section of grocery stores.
