KEFTEDE PITAS WITH MINT YOGURT SAUCE

Keftede are Greek-style meatballs made with beef, lamb, mint and onions. We grill them, then serve them in a pita with our tangy Mint Yogurt Sauce.

Yield: Serves 6.

KEFTEDE PITAS WITH MINT YOGURT SAUCE

Ingredients

  • ​1/2 lb (0.25 kg) lean ground beef
  • 1/2 lb (0.25 kg) lean ground lamb
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped shallots
  • 1/4 cup soft fresh bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • Lettuce leaves*
  • Chopped tomatoes*
  • Sliced red onion*
  • 6 pita bread
  • Mint Yogurt Sauce*

Directions

  1. To prepare keftedes, combine beef, lamb, mint, shallots, bread crumbs, egg, garlic, salt, pepper and cinnamon. Shape mixture into 18 balls, each about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 4 hours.
  2. Preheat natural gas barbecue on medium heat for 10 - 15 minutes.
  3. Place keftedes on a grill topper and grill over medium heat on natural gas barbecue, turning occasionally, until completely cooked.
  4. Place lettuce, tomatoes, red onion and 3 keftedes on one side of each pita. Top with Mint Yogurt Sauce. Fold pitas in half.

MINT YOGURT SAUCE

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt​
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
  • 2 tbsp sliced green onion
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp liquid honey
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper

Yield: Makes about 1 3/4 cup.

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients until blended. Refrigerate until serving.
