Seasoning Salt

This versatile seasoning mixture can be used on meat and vegetables.

Yield: Makes 3 tbsp

Seasoning Salt


  • 1 tbsp Szechuan peppercorns
  • 1 tbsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seed or dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp thyme, crumbled
  • 1/2 tsp thyme, crumbled
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp celery seed
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp oregano, crumbled


  1. Place all ingredients in a spice mill or coffee grinder; grind until blended. Alternatively, mixture may be ground using a mortar and pestle. Store in an airtight container in a cool dry place.

Tip: A Szechuan peppercorn looks like a black peppercorn but has been split in order to remove its small bitter seed. Szechuan peppercorns have a strong lemon-like flavour. Look for them in specialty food stores or Asian grocery stores. If unavailable, 1 tsp each black peppercorns and lemon and herbs seasoning may be substituted for the 1 tbsp Szechuan peppercorns
