SLOPPY JOES

Sloppy Joes are always a hit with kids and adults alike. Serve this sweet and tangy beef mixture with fresh Kaiser buns.

Yield: Serves 8.

SLOPPY JOES

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped onions
  • 1 1/4 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/8 tsp garlic powder
  • 8 whole wheat kaiser buns, halved

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add beef and onions. Cook, stirring to break up beef, until browned, about 7 - 10 minutes.
  3. Drain off excess fat.
  4. Stir in next 10 ingredients (ketchup through garlic powder). Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 7 - 10 minutes or until slightly thickened.
  5. Spoon about 1/2 cup of beef mixture onto bottom half of each bun. Cover with top halves of buns.
